Genetics and Exercise

Most observed characteristics are a result of the combined effects of multiple genes (which is known as polygenic traits) or by interactions between genes and the environment. Nell focuses on genes that fall into the second category, meaning all your results are actionable through modification of your diet.

Nell looks at the link between genetics and exercise. Genetic variations influence a variety of aspects of exercise– everything from the optimal exercise type for your body to the most efficient way for you to lose weight. You may already be aware of some of these traits, such as your baseline fitness, but other traits, such as your body’s muscle composition, you won’t know until you’ve had your genes genotyped.

Although the terms are often used interchangeably, Nell uses genotyping, not sequencing to analyse your DNA. Genotyping determines genetic variants that an individual has whilst sequencing looks at the exact sequence of the DNA. Technology has not yet progressed to the point where it is feasible to sequence an entire person’s genome quickly and cheaply. The same applies to looking at epigenetics.
